No fewer than thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
